Linux is rapidly becoming one of the key environments for modern data centers and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 is an important step with the new capabilities it provides for management and server virtualization, Emulex of Costa Mesa, California said. The company has also contributed to the new enhancements of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, it said. Emulex looks forward to continued collaboration with Red Hat driving the adoption of Linux and open source technology into mission-critical production, the company added.
The key features and support from Emulex for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 include virtualization support, ensuring interoperability with the Xen 3.0 server virtualization module, clustering support with multipathing compatibility enabled by the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Device Mapper module, and increased manageability by fully implementing "sysfs" permitting third party applications to collect HBA subsystem information, Emulex said.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 provides reduced costs, improved operational flexibility, a comprehensive services portfolio, and an unmatched partner ecosystem, Red Hat of Raleigh, North Carolina said. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 provides a number of enhancements including additional performance, scalability and security features, extensive new hardware support, expanded development environment and toolset, improved interoperability with Microsoft Windows and Unix, the company said last week.
Emulex creates enterprise-class products that connect storage, servers and networks. The company offers HBAs, intelligent storage platforms and embedded storage products, including switches, bridges, routers and I/O (input-output) controllers, that are built into reliable, scalable and high performance storage and server solutions, Emulex said.
The Emulex Linux driver is fully qualified and supported by server and storage OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) including Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) , IBM Corp., EMC Corp., Dell Inc., and Hitachi Data Systems Corp. (HDS), Emulex said. For enterprise customers, the new enhancement ensures comprehensive support from both Red Hat and their storage solution provider, the company said.
The Emulex Linux driver works across all models of Emulex LightPulse HBAs, the company said. The Emulex HBAnyware management application supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, and customers can use it to simplify HBA management for the entire SAN (storage area network), saving time and money, it said. Emulex is working closely with a number of Linux and Xen technology providers, offering a development kit that enables the creation and management of multiple logical connections servicing virtual servers or individual applications, Emulex added.
