Nexsan launches searchable archive appliance

Mar 8 -- Nexsan Technologies Inc. has announced that its Assureon SA Searchable Archive Appliance, a disk-based archiving solution for smaller enterprises, branch offices and departmental groups that need simple and secure archiving capabilities for up to 20 million documents along with rapid file retrieval, based on searching document content or metadata for key words or phrases, the company said.

Assureon SA’s secure storage architecture ensures the long term integrity of all archival content through automated integrity checks and self healing functions, Nexsan said last week. Utilizing Content Addressable Storage (CAS) technology to simplify management and reduce the cost of storing important digital assets, Assureon SA provides a cost-effective alternative to tape and delivers fast, intelligent and affordable online access to archival information, thus simplifying the retrieval of digital assets required for corporate governance, compliance requirements and electronic discovery, Nexsan of Woodland Hills, California added.

Search capabilities of the Assureon SA’s CAS architecture deliver accurate results with de-duplicated results, contextual excerpts and summarization, and highlighted query terms, the company said. Users can search for documents by date; special fields such as title, location, size and author; and keywords and/or phrases, it said. Document-level security ensures that users will not see documents in a result set that they do not have access permission, it added.

Digital archives are not only growing in capacity, but also in the number of individual objects, defined as files and associated metadata that are being managed by IT, according to research firm Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG). The firm’s Digital Archiving report shows a 65 percent CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of all archived data between 2007 and 2010.

By leveraging CAS technology to store files, images, recordings, email, and other fixed content as objects with a secure and unique universal identifier, small business users now have another option apart from traditional file system models, ESG of Milford, Massachusetts said. With the Assureon SA Archive Appliance, Nexsan has delivered a complete hardware/software solution that is easy enough to use for those organizations that may lack extensive IT resources and expertise yet provides powerful security and data protection that companies of all size require, ESG added.

Nexsan’s Assureon SA Archive Appliance is a simple and highly effective way for SMEs (small and medium enterprises) and enterprise departments to protect, retain, search for and rapidly retrieve important digital assets, Nexsan said. The Assureon SA delivers everything that smaller organizations need in an archival solution as it is a plug-and-play system that is easy to use, doesn’t require a lot of space, is highly reliable and provides enterprise-class security at a fraction of the cost of comparable legacy solutions, it added.

Assureon SA is a second-generation CAS appliance that allows simple integration for archiving, e-discovery, email and more, according to Nexsan. Its secure storage architecture delivers intelligent features including constant monitoring of file integrity, Lifecycle Management, file authentication, missing file alerts, and support for remote replication, the company said. Data integrity and security is assured with RAID 6 (redundant array of independent disks) protection, which prevents the risk of data loss even if two drives fail, and WORM (write once, read many) disk functionality that provides non-erasable, non-rewritable functionality, it added.

The Assureon SA Archive Appliance is already available through Nexsan’s worldwide channel of resellers, the company said.
