Nov 28 -- EMC Corp. has launched its Documentum OEM Edition which is an embeddable enterprise content management (ECM) platform designed for the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) market. As part of the new offering, OEMs will be able to access EMC Velocity2 Technology and ISV (independent software vendor) program resources, to help them market and deliver ECM solutions to customers, EMC said.

Documentum OEM Edition allows software developers to implement Documentum as the content management foundation for applications that handle content, from accounts payable and contracts management applications to vertical applications in life sciences, aerospace, financial services and energy, according to EMC of Hopkinton, Massachusetts. It offers unified architecture, compatibility and functionality, including security, scalability and support for distributed environments, similar to the EMC Documentum enterprise content management platform, EMC added last week.

Every enterprise application deals with various forms of content including documents, XML (Extensible Markup Language), reports and electronic forms, EMC said. Application vendors realize that building their own repositories and content platforms is costly and can be a distraction to their core business, the company added. Partners use off-the-shelf databases for structured information, and their needs will similarly be met by using an off-the-shelf content platform, it added.

Documentum OEM Edition allows OEMs to gain competitive advantage by reducing the research and development (R&D) costs associated with designing a content repository, and gives the OEMs more time for building applications, EMC said.

Documentum OEM Edition contains a preconfigured version of the EMC Documentum Content Server, and has the same functionality and application programming interface (API) as the version sold to enterprise customers, EMC said. The platform meets the needs of the host application and is optimized for typical usage profiles in a resource-restricted environment, it added. It also comes with a silent installer for easier embedding into the host application without introducing any new dependencies, the company added.

Partners who purchase Documentum OEM Edition can also leverage a range of best-in-class programs for building applications and solutions integrated with the Documentum platform through the EMC Velocity2 Technology and ISV Program, EMC said. The benefits of the EMC Documentum OEM Edition include technical support, access to training, application interoperability testing and certification, the company added.

OEMs who purchase Documentum OEM Edition get access to the EMC Content Management Developer Network which is a technical resource of a community of more than 40,000 developers, that provides technical know-how and keeps users abreast of content management news, EMC said. EMC Documentum OEM users can also take advantage of the EMC Application Developer Program that helps ISVs, VSPs and SIs (system integrators) target, design, develop and go to market with products based on the EMC Documentum platform, EMC added. As members, partners can submit their products to be considered for "Designed for EMC Documentum" accreditation, which ensures that the product has met all requirements to be certified on the Documentum platform, it added.

EMC also provides a set of support programs to assist OEMs in building their applications on top of the Documentum platform, and to enable them to provide first levels of support with a seamless escalation process back to the EMC Documentum support group, EMC said.

Enterprises want technology vendors to support an ecosystem of services and solutions partners certified in developing CEVAs (content-enabled vertical applications) on stable, mature, and feature-rich repositories, according to research firm, Gartner Inc. of Stamford, Connecticut. The business benefit of ECM is derived from retiring isolated custom code and independent silos, and adopting a solutions framework that ensures good support or upgrade path, while delivering immediate value toward business goals, Gartner said.

The EMC Velocity2 Technology and ISV Program allows technology companies to build solutions integrated with EMC platforms and develop applications that work with EMC technologies, EMC said. Program participants receive technical support, access to training, application interoperability testing, and certification, the company added. Partners can market their integrations with EMC technology and participate in a range of joint marketing activities, it added. In addition, by pursuing an OEM relationship with EMC, ISVs can explore embedding EMC technology in their products to deliver stronger, integrated solutions for their customers, EMC added.

EMC Documentum OEM Edition will be available by end of the fourth quarter of 2006, EMC said. The company provides flexible licensing models to match the model of the host application, it added.
