Asempra introduces new version of CDP software

Oct 10 -- Asempra Technologies Inc. has introduced real-time and granular protection features in the new version of its continuous data protection (CDP) software. The company announced recently the availability of the Asempra Business Continuity Server (BCS) Version 2.0 with real-time protection, granular and on-demand recovery for Microsoft Exchange from Microsoft Corp.

The Asempra Business Continuity Server, which was introduced to the market in September last year, delivers recovery management software that dramatically improves application continuity, the company said. Asempra provides application data recovery time in minutes, regardless of data set size, through patented on-demand data recovery.

The granular and real-time recovery features enable companies to move from traditional point-in-time data recovery to real-time recovery of any type of Exchange object, Asempra of Sunnyvale, California said. Asempra’s granular recovery allows IT organizations to recover any type of Microsoft Exchange object like an individual email, contact, or full user inbox without taking Microsoft Exchange offline. The real-time feature enables IT and Microsoft Exchange administrators to protect and recover Exchange to any second in time as opposed to the last snapshot or last incremental backup, the company added.

The Asempra BCS is an application-aware recovery management platform that dramatically improves application continuity by providing on-demand recovery of data. Implementing an Asempra BCS solution assures data integrity at every point-in-time, eliminates backup windows, works as efficiently over WANs as LANs, and simplifies company’s data protection infrastructure, according to Asempra.

The Asempra BCS combines data protection and disaster recovery for Microsoft Exchange, any Windows file server application, and SQL database applications. Integration with existing tape backup systems is provided through a standard interface for tape archival products including Veritas NetBackup, Legato NetWorker, and Tivoli Storage Manager to fully utilize existing software to store data to tape. The Asempra BCS 2.0 is available immediately directly from Asempra Technologies, the company said.

The Asempra BCS is a real-time system that is purposely designed from the ground up to provide real-time recovery management services, the company said. The Asempra BCS consists of three core components – the BCS Continuous Protection Driver, the BCS Continuous Object Store (COS), and the BCS Gateway.

The BCS Continuous Protection Driver resides on the same host server as the protected application. This driver captures all transaction events that cause application data to be updated and sends that data to the BCS Continuous Object Store. In order to provide real-time data protection and recovery services to any host, a BCS Continuous Protection Driver must be installed on the host. The Continuous Protection Driver streams real-time events, metadata, and delta strings to a BCS Continuous Object Store which indexes real-time information (events, metadata, and data), provides policy-based management of the real-time data history, and provides a real-time object catalog to the BCS Gateway, Asempra said.

The BCS Continuous Object Store (COS) is the core of the BCS which collects and protects application data from one or more Continuous Protection Drivers, according to Asempra. The BCS Gateway is the management server that a standard web browser can interface with to be used as the centralized management console. It is a data management application platform which includes a GUI (graphical user interface) for displaying the real-time object catalog for user management of the BCS and data recovery, the company added. The GUI features a time dial for navigating data over a range of time.
