Sepaton announces new backup, deduplication products

Sepaton Inc. enhanced on Monday its enterprise-ready data protection and recovery line with the introduction of the S2100-ES2 Series 1000 VTL (virtual tape library), and new software with enhanced deduplication performance and scalability. Together, these solutions enable large enterprises to backup, restore, and deduplicate petabytes (PB) of data at unmatched speed and efficiency. This solution enables data risk management and provides enterprise-class data protection. It has been selected by brands, such as BMW, MIT, Panasonic, and CitiStreet.

The new S2100-ES2 VTL Series 1000 platform includes 1TB disk drives, increasing footprint density by 33 percent, and enhanced DeltaStor V5.0 deduplication software, delivering ContentAware performance.

Sepaton helps enterprises reduce risk and improve operational efficiency in the data center with its scalable VTL solution. Built on the company’s patented ContentAware architecture, Sepaton products enable enterprises to consolidate and protect information by deduplicating, backing up and restoring petabytes of data at wire speed without disruption to their existing infrastructure. The company also combines these products with proven methodologies and in-depth services expertise to deliver a measurable return on investment (ROI).

“The ES2-2100 has served as our VTL appliance for three years and since that time our data growth has exceeded 50% year-over-year,” said Michael Grillo, principal engineer, Foxwoods Resort Casino. “Looking forward to our next VTL upgrade, my team will require that the appliance be as dense as possible to conserve rack space and to use less power and cooling capacity. The 1TB disk drives available with the Series 1000 is attractive as it will allow us to store more data in less space and at a reduced cost. Speaking from experience, adding new technology to the Sepaton platform including capacity upgrades has always been easy.”

“Continuity is one of the ‘C-4’ issues on the front burner for both company directors and IT managers today - the others being cost-containment, compliance and carbon footprint reduction,” said Jon Toigo, managing principal, Toigo Partners International. “Sepaton’s latest blend of VTL, de-duplication and remote replication is well aligned with that business goal. I am also impressed by the sensibility of Sepaton both in terms of their desire to work within existing disk-tape ecosystems rather than joining their competitors’ misguided ‘tape is dead’ chorus, and in their future plans to evolve their solution into a broader data management play.”

The S2100-ES2 is built upon Sepaton’s ContentAware architecture to give users unparalleled control over data, and to add advanced data protection applications, including remote replication and data deduplication. Companies with requirements ranging from 3.5TB to petabytes of backup can seamlessly scale.

The new Series 1000 enables customers to meet increasingly stringent Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and shortened backup windows with quick time to data protection and recovery; to reduce capital expenses from achieving the highest deduplication ratios available; and to keep more backups online longer.

“Our vision for data protection goes beyond our previously established leadership in backup and restore capabilities,” said Michael Worhach, Sepaton’s president and chief executive officer. “Sepaton is a data protection company focused on delivering a platform that provides customers a unique level of investment protection. With our ContentAware approach, we are offering a foundation to grow capacity and performance over time, as well as seamlessly integrate additional unique capabilities that respond to changing data center requirements.”

The key new features of the S2100-ES2 Series 1000 VTL and DeltaStor software version 5.0 include new hardware platform and enhanced enterprise-class deduplication software.

The S2100-ES2 Series 1000 features 1TB disk drives (previously 750 GB) and up to 16 processing nodes. As a result, it can backup and restore data at 34.5 TB/hour (terabytes-per-hour), store 1.6 PB of useable data (previously 1.2 PBs) per appliance, and reduce the space requirements to store that data by as much as 50:1 with DeltaStor deduplication software. These enhancements afford 33% more density in the same footprint, thereby reducing floor space, power and cooling requirements significantly. The S2100-ES2 Series 1000 features 4 Gb Fibre Channel technology designed to enable backup/restores at up to 9600 MB/sec.

The S2100-ES2 Series 1000 is designed to leverage a grid architecture and the speed of the ES2, while the DeltaStor 5.0 offers multi-node scalability that can handle tens of petabytes of data. Included in release 5.0 is a new graphical user interface (GUI) that enables customers to select the data they want to deduplicate, rather than data pre-selected by the vendor.

Tunable deduplication algorithms deliver enterprise customers the world’s best optimization for the data types and applications used in their environment. New custom reporting capabilities feature views of deduplication performance by backup names or cartridges. To facilitate capacity planning, DeltaStor offers detailed system capacity information. Configurable email alerts are also included in the new DeltaStor GUI.

The S2100-ES2 Series 1000 is orderable and offers scalable capacity up to 1.6 PB (petabytes) and scalable performance up to 9600 MB/s. Pricing for the S2100-ES2 Series 1000 Rack Ready starts at US$ 69,000 for 10 TB usable. New DeltaStor version 5.0 software is available as an option for the ES2 Series 1000.
