COPAN, Quantum team to offer archive solution for unstructured content

COPAN Systems Inc., a provider of purpose-built data platform for Persistent Data, announced Wednesday that it has entered into a relationship with Quantum Corp., a global provider of backup, recovery and archive, to deliver a file-based archive data management solution for unstructured data.

This new solution enables organizations to archive up to 896 TB (terabytes) of file-based, persistent (non changing, fixed or static) data in a cabinet with a footprint of under 1m2 (square meter).

Engineered for government and Global 5000 companies, the combined solution consists of Quantum's StorNext Data Management Software and COPAN Systems' Enterprise MAID (Massive Array of Idle Disks) disk-based storage. This file-based density allows organizations to store and share a high-speed pool of digital assets including media content and captured data.

Quantum and COPAN Systems already share customers that are using the new solution, including organizations in the government space, as well as the media and entertainment industry. The combined solution is offered by COPAN through its direct sales force and channel partners.

COPAN of Longmont, Colorado provides purpose-built persistent data platform for cost-effective management, storage, access and recovery of persistent Data for companies challenged with managing the cost and complexities of accelerated data growth. With its enterprise MAID OS, COPAN Systems provides for long-term storage, protection and retrieval of persistent data.

The Enterprise MAID architecture reduces power, cooling and floor space costs in the data center. Expanding to well over 8 PB (petabytes) within a single chassis, COPAN Systems delivers high density and scalability for large enterprise environments, including healthcare, financial, government, media and service provider industries. The company is privately held with investments by Austin Ventures, Globespan Capital, Pequot Ventures, Credit Suisse and Battery Ventures.

"Quantum's StorNext provides a seamless capability for fast data access to enormous amounts of digital information," says David J. Donald, CEO, Keeper Technology. "Our customers have already deployed this unique solution leveraging COPAN's persistent data platform, which is also designed to store and manage enormous amounts of data." Donald continues, "Access is provided through the StorNext File System from Tier-1 disk, typically high-speed Fibre Channel-based RAID systems containing 'dynamic' data. StorNext Storage Manager extends this capacity to a COPAN platform allowing our shared customers in the Federal sector substantial file-based scalability."

By integrating COPAN Systems' MAID technology with StorNext, COPAN Systems and Quantum have redefined the optimal cost/performance storage architecture. The combined solution allows customers to drive down costs, reduce duplicate file data hosted on network and direct-attached storage and simplify the archiving of persistent or rarely changing files, which has been estimated to be about 80 percent of all file-based data.

"With detailed experience in solving access management problems in data intensive environments, Quantum has a solid reputation as the trusted vendor for storing, managing, protecting, and accessing large volumes of file data," said Garry Veale, Chief Sales Officer of COPAN Systems. "With this new relationship, COPAN Systems is extending its ground-breaking architecture to redefine the optimal cost/performance storage architecture in the file archive management market."

"The combination of COPAN Systems' MAID technology and Quantum StorNext Data Management Software offers a powerful solution, delivering strong return on investment, faster access and simplified management of archive data," said Lance Hukill, vice president, software sales for Quantum. "We are excited to work with COPAN, together supporting the needs of government, media and entertainment and Global 5000 enterprise customers looking for a better way to share, manage and access unstructured digital assets." Using COPAN Systems' Enterprise MAID as a principal storage level, StorNext provides an online repository, with the following key capabilities. The joint solution optimizes performance through drive spin-up and spin-down control, including sub-second average access time to all primary data, provides lifecycle cost savings over alternative content addressed storage (CAS) or ATA RAID/tape solutions, and offers ensured business continuity. It also offers RAID reliability and data protection, provides automatic replication and backup/recovery, including compliant media, and offers massive scalability to multiple petabytes and beyond. The joint solution also offers enterprise-wide data sharing from Windows, Unix, Linux and MacOS platforms and offers simplified system administration.

COPAN Systems utilizes a patented MAID-based architecture, and solutions such as POWER MANAGED RAID and DISK AEROBICS, to deliver massively scalable and reliable disk-based storage at dramatically lower cost points.

Companies in the financial services, government, media and service provider industries are choosing COPAN Systems' Enterprise MAID platform to replace tape in archive, backup, recovery and scientific research applications.
